5 reasons to visit Fiji

DC Vekic blog April 20, 2019

Being a Fiji Matai Specialist is a great honor, and my immersion trip to Fiji made me fall in love all over again with this magical country, it’s landscapes and it’s people… Here are my top 5 reasons

1 –  Fijian People. They will welcome you with a song and will make you cry when it’s time to leave.

2 – It is a soft coral capital of the world. Snorkeling and diving is AMAZING! (Check me out with Jean Michel Cousteau).

3 – the FOOD! Quickly becoming one of the major foodie destinations, with such diverse population and influences.

4 – Fijian Green crested iguana. They thought they were extinct, but now there is breeding program at the Likuliku Lagoon Resort.

5 – it’s a non stop night flight from LAX, you can get there and come back sleeping…

BULA! (In Fijian it means “hello”, “goodbye”, “cheers”, etc…)

The year of the sea grass…

DC Vekic blog August 14, 2018

This has been one of the toughest years with so much sea grass floating all over the Caribbean Sea. It devastated all our sugar white beaches from Barbados, Dominican Republic, Mexico …

This is definitely nowhere near as bad as it got, but as much as we had cleaning crews on sire there was not much to be done. The seagrass could be seen from the airplane all over. Over the water bungalows in Mexico and Jamaica look like they are standing in flood water.

It is just one of those years… We don’t have seagrass in Costa Rica, but Costa Rica is mostly covered in black sand. Cabo and Puerto Vallarta are on the Pacific Coast where we don’t have this issue, but everyone has already been there..

I think this article describes it the best, I did not want to go with such dramatic photos,  although everything they posted it quite true… Although the article is about Playa Del Carmen, it’s quite accurate about an entire Caribbean and we have a link to the current seagrass map… THE SUMMER OF SEAWEED is an accurate description

Mama Mia Tribute Sailings by StarClippers

DC Vekic blog April 5, 2018

Clearly this is not a cruise ship in the ordinary sense. On Star Clippers, you will find that there are no rigid schedules. You are free to do as you wish with your days – and evenings. To entertain you, they bring local performers on board to give passengers an authentic taste of the local music and arts.

So rather than enduring another Broadway revue, you can enjoy the conviviality of fellow shipmates while a live band plays tropical tunes from a real paradise. The Captain and crew are superb improvisers of the kind of light-hearted fun you’ll only find on Star Clippers. The Captain’s daily briefing on deck is wonderfully informative and a chance to hear some great story-telling as well. And there are other events and activities, such as knot tying and navigation classes, that have evolved from Star Clippers’ sailing heritage. In fact, their passengers tell them that it’s the easy-going informality of Star Clippers that makes a cruise with them so enjoyable.

Beginning in May, 2019, Star Clippers will pay homage to the beloved romantic comedy Mamma Mia with their new “Mamma Mia Highlights” sailings through the Greek isles. This seven-night itinerary, sailing round trip out of Athens, will visit several of the islands where Mamma Mia—as well as the highly anticipated Mamma Mia 2—were filmed. Guests will visit the island of Skopelos, home to the most iconic Mamma Mia location—the tiny chapel of Agios Ioannis sto Kastri, where Sophie was married. Perched atop a rock cliff more than 300 feet above the Aegean Sea, this picturesque church features 100 steps carved into rock leading to its entrance as well as panoramic views from all sides. Also located on Skopelos is the sweeping view from “Villa Donna” (the actual house was a Hollywood set) and Kastani, the beach where Tanya sings “Does Your Mother Know.” This special itinerary will also call on the island of Skiathos, where the charming Old Port was the setting for the scene where the three fathers meet for the first time, and the area around the St. Nikolaos Bell Tower was the spot where Sophie mailed her letters.

It’s a beautiful sailing which starts in Athens, stops in Dikii, Turkey after a day at sea, continues to Myrina Limnos (Greece), and then visits those rare gems of Sporades Archipelago – Skiathos and Skopelos, which are very personally important to me, as I took my parents on our last trip before my daughter was born. It continues to the Island of Poros, that has the Temple of Poseidon, and then it return to Athens.

For people with more time on their hands, I suggest adding a Southern Cyclades sailing before the Mama Mia, because it visits Rhodes, Santorini and Hydra.
